A standard PPF is a multi-layer composite, typically 5 to 12 mils (125 to 300 microns) thick. The most common structure, processed in two main passes on a production line, consists of the following layers
Protective PET Liner (Top Layer): A temporary, thin (approx. 2 mils) polyester film that protects the self-healing topcoat during storage, handling, and installation. It is removed just before or after application.
Self-Healing Topcoat: A specialized, clear polymer coating (often a polyurethane or hardcoat) that gives the film its ability to heal scratches through heat or the application of a solvent. This can be applied as a liquid coating or through co-extrusion.
TPU Base Film: The main protective layer, providing the core strength, impact resistance, and durability against rock chips and road debris. This layer can be made from various TPU formulations, such as polyester-based, polyether-based, or polycaprolactone-based TPUs.
Pressure-Sensitive Adhesive (PSA): The layer that bonds the film to the vehicle's paint. It is often applied with a pattern that includes air channels to prevent bubbles and allow for repositioning during installation.
Release Liner (Bottom Layer): A silicone-coated liner (approx. 2 mils) that protects the adhesive until the moment of installation. This is peeled off to expose the PSA
